Book Discussion & Pot Luck
Noon
Sunday, July 12, 2009

Book Discussion & Pot Luck at the Clubhouse in beautiful, rustic WildWood, located about-a-mile from Route 57, and next to Granville State Forest in Tolland, Massachusetts.  Our hostess Pam G. invites us for an afternoon of shared good food and interesting discussion.  We’ll be discussing:

Survival of the Sickest by Sharon Moalem with Jonathan Prince.

How did a deadly genetic disease help our ancestors survive the bubonic plagues of Europe? Was diabetes evolution's response to the last Ice Age?  Will a visit to the tanning salon help bring down your cholesterol?  Why do we age?  Why are some people immune to HIV?  Can your genes be turned on or off?  Survival of the Sickest reveals the answers to these and many other questions as it unravels the amazing connections between evolution, disease, and human health today.  Joining the ranks of modern myth busters, Dr. Sharon Moalem turns our current understanding of illness on its head and challenges us to fundamentally change the way we think about our bodies, our health, and our relationship to just about every other living thing on earth, from plants and animals to insects and bacteria.  Survival of the Sickest is filled with fascinating insights and cutting-edge research, presented in a way that is both accessible and utterly absorbing.  This is a book about the interconnectedness of all life on earth and, especially, what that means for us.  Listen to it.  You're already living it.

Check out the scenery and get directions from www.wildwoodpropertyowners.com ,

RSVP to Pamela G. to coordinate food. [Check Media]

5th Friday Dinner
6:30 PM
Friday, July 31, 2009

5th Friday Dinner (floating location)  We liked the relatively new Indian restaurant UTSAV so well, we'll go again this month, while looking to expand horizons for October. (They were able to make many dishes mild on request.)  (Any suggestions to check out?)  Entrees $14 to $16 are big enough to share or reprise the next day at home; Appetizers are less.

Located at 575 Talcottville Rd., Vernon, CT, it's on route 83, north of I-84, just over 2 miles north of exit 64 off I-84 East. (If coming on I-84 West, use exit 65, turn left, then right at the next light onto Dobson Road. Join 83 North by turning right at the traffic light at Battiston's Cleaners.)  UTSAV is in the small plaza on the left at the next traffic light going north after Walgreen's pharmacy and the Panda Palace. Going north, you can turn left into a condo entrance road just south of the plaza, and immediately right into the plaza, or if there's no oncoming traffic, turn left at the light directly into the plaza.

Please let Barbara S. [check Media] know if you plan on coming so we can sit together. See you there?

ConnectiCon
Friday, July 31 through Sunday August 2

Mensa will be at ConnectiCon in Hartford!  (www.connecticon.org)  ConnectiCon is fan-run, membership based organization for enthusiasts of sequential art (web comics, anime, comic books, graphic novels, manga, cartoons, etc.), hobby games (board, card, tabletop miniatures, roleplaying, live action RP, paintball, etc.), electronic gaming (consoles, PC, arcade, pinball, etc.), science fiction, fantasy, horror and related genres. Past guests have hailed from Star Trek, Dead Like Me, and Stargate just to name a few.  The event is still in its young formative years, not yet a decade old, but growing rapidly on the convention circuit and expected to draw over 7,000 guests this year. The age demographic is the 14-28 range, so a younger crowd comparatively speaking.  This year the national office has agreed to sponsor the event and we have advertising, a booth in the dealer hall, and will run tests daily in the activity rooms.

So why am I telling you all of this?  Well, first this is an invitation to attend, and second this is a call for volunteers.  ConnectiCon is offering a $5 on-site discount for tickets to Mensa members.  You will need to show your membership card when picking up your pass, so have it with you when you go.  Now, for volunteers …

The booth is a marketing effort and volunteers are needed to staff it. If you are comfortable talking to people, shaking hands with 2,000-3,000 young strangers, talking up the organization, chapter and foundation, discussing the convention subject matter, and generally mingling, WE NEED YOU! The access badge will be provided, you will be fed pizza, candy and cheap soda, and you will get to spend the day at the convention with me and the other volunteers. David Collier can be reached at Testing@CWM.US.Mensa.org so please write to get on the schedule today!  (Bonus points if you already own a set of furry ears.)

Saturday, June 20, 2009

135 Route 5 South
Norwich, VT 05055
Phone: 802-649-3361

www.kingarthurflour.com/ourstore

King Arthur Flour's campus in Norwich contains a Baker's Store, Cafe, Bakery, and School. We'll meet at the Cafe at 11:30 a.m. and enjoy their fine sandwiches, pizzas, soups, cakes, pies, and pastries. If the weather is nice, we can take our selections out to the picnic tables overlooking their pond and enjoy our lunch al fresco.

Afterwards, those who wish to can enjoy shopping in the Baker's Store, which has everything your inner chef needs, from hard-to-find ingredients, innovative gadgets, and top-quality pans, to easy mixes and a huge selection of baking basics (according to their website, which alone is worth a visit). In the store's kitchen, you can watch their bakers and enjoy free samples.

For those without an interest in all things culinary, the town of Hanover, New Hampshire is just 4 miles away. You could stroll through its shops and visit the Dartmouth campus. (Commencement will have already passed; I was sure to check.) Dartmouth's Hood Museum of Art has several special exhibits on display at this time, including caricatures by Honori Daumier.

RSVP to Claire N. [Check Media] by 8pm the night before, so we can be sure to keep an eye out for you at King Arthur Flour's cafe.

LAST OF THE JUST by Andre Schwarz-Bart (fiction)
Schwarz-Bart's 1959 novel is a chronicle of Jewish persecution beginning in England in 1105 and ending with the Holocaust. This book was a huge hit when first released, eventually being translated into several languages. It is both a historical document and a compelling piece of fiction.
According to Jewish tradition, 36 "just men" are born in every generation to take the burden of the world's suffering upon themselves. This book tells the story of two Jews, divided by eight centuries, who are persecuted to death, becoming part of the catastrophic history of the Jewish people.

WORLD WITHOUT END by Ken Follett (fiction)
In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, a sweeping epic novel set in 12th-century England that centered on the building of a cathedral and the men, women, and children whose lives it changed forever. Critics were overwhelmed, and readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End takes place in the same town of Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building the exquisite Gothic cathedral that was at the heart of The Pillars of the Earth. The cathedral and the priory are again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge. Three years in the writing, World Without End once again shows that Ken Follett is a masterful author writing at the top of his craft.

DEAD UNTIL DARK (Southern Vampire Mysteries, No. 1) by Charlaine Harris (fiction)
Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. Until the vampire of her dreams walks into her life--and one of her coworkers checks out... Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn't such a bright idea. A fun, fast, funny, and wonderfully intriguing blend of vampire and mystery that's hard to put down, and should not be missed. (This book is the basis of the HBO TV series “Trueblood”.)
